▶ Your Answer :
As our society become realistic and
pragmatic, some people begin to think that students have to choose practical
subjects such as IT technology and genetic science because they firmly believe
that those only can guarantee successful careers in the future. On the other
hand, other people assert that young people should select subjects according to
their interests. In this essay, I will discuss both perspective and suggest my
viewpoint on the issue.
It is unavoidable that students tend to
enroll courses in relation to useful fields like genetics and the information
business since those are closely connected with main industries that national
institutions have encouraged. Therefore,
it is natural to claim that those majors would provide them with more
opportunities to have occupations with a high salary. In addition, with
governments having invested a large sum of their budget into the areas to boost
national economy, the trend becomes more and more noticeable. Accordingly, it
seems reasonable that students ought to be permitted to study these academics. However,
many people are inclined to overlook that unbalanced proportion of vocations
could create unstable society and economic state. Hence, the factitious
attempt, which induces young people to involve in certain subjects, should not
be approved because it has the possibility to bring out severe consequences,
which would make our community imbalanced and disproportional.
Meanwhile, others assert that all
university students have an academic freedom to opt for whatever they are
interested in. The main reason is that a variety of realms, without regard to
practicality, can enable them to broaden the horizon of their knowledge and
perspectives. For instance, Thomas Kuhn, an author of ‘The structure of
Scientific Revolution’, used to gain a lot of insights on Science from
humanities and expand his viewpoints by reading philosophical materials, which
seems unnecessary for scientific researches. As can be seen in the example, it
is undeniable to conclude that pragmatic domains are also intertwined with
theoretical bases and people can find various kinds of enlightenments through crossing
multiple fields of academics, even if those are impractical ones. In other
words, students need to pay adequate attention to multifarious areas, not
concentrating on only useful fields.
In my opinion, it is obvious that university
students have to study many kinds of branches regardless of practical use
because all academic spheres are entwined with each other and there are strong
correlations between practicability and academic foundation. Moreover, I am
fully convinced that restriction on academic choices is not beneficial for
making our society better.
