Many women are in the workforce today, but
only a few are in senior positions. What causes this phenomenon? Suggest
possible solutions that would resolve this issue.
Although
the proportion of working female population has increased these days, we can
rarely find women in senior positions in the workforce. While this issue is
quite serious, it can be resolved by implementing a more well-developed welfare
policy.
The low
portion of senior female leaders at work is caused from complicated social
issues but it is mostly related to the barriers which bother women developing
their professional career after pregnancy and reproduction. In fact, most
married women tend to have a break from the work after they give a birth at
least 6 months or longer. This is because they don’t have any support to raise
their children. Due to the career break, many women easily lose chances for getting
promotion in the workforce. Recent research targeting married women in Korea
has shown that unlike male employees, approximate 60 percent of working women have
had struggled to follow up their career path and find opportunities for
promotion which could bring them into senior positions since they were back to
the office after maternal leaves.
Nevertheless, there are some solutions to this issue. It is
apparent that the government should play a vital role in developing social welfare
policy to solve inequality between working women and men. To be specific, the
government can encourage corporates to adopt alternative ways such as flextime
work or parental leaves. The UK can be a prime example. According to the survey
last year, the number of senior women staff is almost similar to that of men in
the 10 top priority ranking finance companies as the UK government has strictly
implemented social welfare policy for better equality at work.
To sum up, unfortunately, there are only a few women in the
senior positions in the workforce nowadays. Nevertheless, this problem can be
resolved with the development of social welfare policy introduced by the
government.
