This chart gives information about how the American people’s preference of modern technology among four types (Television, Computer, Radio, and Smartphone) has changed on the criteria of hours per month between 1980 and 2015. First, prior to 2005, Radio had taken the first place for twenty years. In particular, the rate of Radio reached a peak in 1990 recording over 350 hours. This figure is the highest level throughout the survey period. However, from this time onwards, the preference of American people towards Radio has steadily decreased until less than 100 hours in the year 2015. On the other hand, in the case of Television, there has been a consistent increase from about 48 hours in 1980 to around 198 hours in 2015, although the rate of 2015 declines slightly compared to the just previous survey. Second, unlike these two technologies above, both Computer and Smartphone have shown a steady but significant growth without any decreases since this survey was introduced. However, the usage of Computer started from 1980 at approximately 25 hours, while the first emergence of Smartphone was backed in 2000. After this year, the preference towards Smartphone has increased explosively. After all, Smartphone had outweighed both Television and Radio from 2010. In conclusion, the preference of Americans with respect to modern technology has moved from Radio and Television to Computer and Smartphone with the passage of time. |
