No doubt that art plays a significant role in modern life. From this importance, should high school make an art class compulsorily? (에세이에서는 가급적 구어체가 아닌 formal expression을 사용합니다) Even if I could appreciate a variety of benefits with regard to Art, I cannot agree with introducing the art class for high school students. As I pointed out above, it becomes difficult to enjoy our lives without Art, particularly in modern society. If we live in a society ignoring the importance of art, the society as well as the citizens living in this society will be the same as a machine. Art can be seen as a symbol of personal preference such as coffee, beer, and clothes. Although some people argue that people could live well without these things, it would be difficult for even them to deny that these things could make people’s life more diverse and interesting. First and most importantly, these advantages related to Art is derived from freedom or ‘liberty’, not compulsion. In accordance with my experience as well as a wide range of researches, both art and compulsion cannot be compatible. Namely, creativity, which is the basis of making art, stemmed from the liberty of thoughts. For example, I liked to draw a picture and play the piano until I go to the entrance into the middle school. This is because I had to take an exam in art classes from that time; taking lectures and tests made it difficult to maintain the interest. Unfortunately, I lost my interest in art since the class at the middle school class. In conclusion, even though I can also understand the significance of art to people, I would like to assert that compulsory art class for high school students could give rise to the unexpected side effects.
