Whether
the long prison senteces are helpful to society or not has been an issue of
controversy. While some say that large jail sentences are best way to decrease
the crime rates, others claim that there are other ways to control. This essay
will discuss both views with some supportive examples.
To
begin with, there are some people saying that criminals can make another crime
consecutively. The recidivism rate is quite high among released prisoners such
as sex offenders, drug takers, etc,. For these prisoners, the crimes are
related to the hormone and addition. So, they obviously need a psychiatrist or
a specialist to be cured. Furthermore, the jail is a minimum safety net to
secure the people from the risk of the crime. People insist that the criminals
should be in prison for a long time until they are reformed perfectly.
On
the other hand, however, others argue that reformation of criminals is more
important than punishing them in jail. To be specific, criminals can be
sentenced to the community service order. For example, a litterer has to clean
a park or other offenders do the work which is related respectively. By
performing it, they can be encouraged to modify their behavior. In addition,
they can contribute to the local community while they are doing manual labors
or chores which normal people are reluctant to do. Moreover, imposition of a
large fine for the offence allows the authorities to collect tax money and use
this for public systems.
To
conclude, I strongly believe that passing the longer prison sentence is not the
only option to cut down on crime rate. We should find more functional ways
which are beneficial for both government and offenders.
