The chart illustrates that how the quantities of products transported in the UK changed in the years 1974 to 2002 by several types of transport.
Firstly, road is the dominant system throughout over the period. It started at around 70 million tones in 1974. Although with some initial fluctuation and decreases between 1990 and 1994, there was an gradual upward trend on road.
Water and rail were used in similar quantities, with around 40 million tones at first. However, water showed a dramatic increase from 40 million tones at 1978 to just under 60 million tones at 1986. Meanwhile, there was a steadily decline on rail to 1985. Water had a stable tendency during 1986 to 1993. After that time, it recorded some decrease, while rail remained fluctuation. Both modes of transport had increases after 1998.
On the other hand, pipeline was an unsignificant type at 1974 with just below 10 million tones. However, there were considerably inclines during 1978 to 1982 and 1992 to 1995. After peaking at 1995 with over 20 million tones, the pipeline sustained the stable.
Overall, there were some changes on the four different types of transport in the UK. However, total degrees on transport were increased during that period. |
