These days there is a belief that it is not easy to go to university for both poor and rich students. However, I firmly believe that it is not true because whether universities treat them differently or not, inequalities still exist. In this essay, I will discuss more reasons why I disagree.
Firstly, the rich and the poor start with different quality of resources in the first place. Even though rich people cannot access to the better education, at least they can access to the better educational information. They know how to prepare to go to university. They know the right way. This is possible by building a strong network with other rich people. Especially, rich families take advantage of this social network, and it enables them to share the right information at the right time for their kids. Thus, it cannot be said that there is no fast track to university.
Secondly, timely and continuous financial support is not relatively easy for poor students. Higher educations require students to pay three to five years straight. Young students themselves cannot afford it. They first have to work really hard and make enough money to pay to make sure that they can graduate successfully. Because of this, their age is usually older than average people in freshman year when they start studying at their first university. This late start is already unfair. Thus, it cannot be said that university is not so open to people whether they are rich or not.
Lastly, there is low level of motivation to go to university among individual poor students. They often and unintentionally end up having a similarly poor group of people around. This affects them when they make life decisions. They do not have people who listen to them about their dreams and continue to watch them patiently. What is normal for others is not normal for them. So in the end they choose to give up university in their life before they go. Thus, it cannot be said that the poor and the rich share the same start in terms of university education.
In conclusion, some people say that going to university is a luxury for both the poor and the rich, while others think that university is still for richer people. It might seem university system in itself is fair right now, but as long as people see only on the surface, there will always be the exceptions. |
