Most of the world's poor live in countries where tourism is a growth industry. The issue is that tourism does not benefit the poor.
How can the income generated by tourism benefit the poor? And how can we ensure that tourism does not destroy traditional culture and ways of life?
Most of the countries have their own comparative advantage of industries. In other words, some countries encourage agriculture as their main industry, and other countries chooses tourism. The problem is although most of the poor countries select tourism, the income by the tourism does not return to the poor, and the tourism can destroy traditional culture. In order to solve these problems, the countries themselves should interfere with the market to protect the poor and promote their culture to travelers.
Countries have to legislate the relevant law to protect the poor in the tourism market. If countries do not take any action about it, only the rich could earn a lot of money because they have enough money to invest. For example, Egypt made rules that enormous companies cannot open souvenir shops within 2km around attractions so that the poor can take advantage of access. Also, some city councils implement subsidy policy for the poor in case they compete with other big-sized company.
To make a brochure of attractions can be a good way to keep traditional culture because people might think the culture is highly valuable enough to keep. There is a region called Gyeongju where modern and antique culture coexist in Korea. In the city, there are a lot of Korea traditional houses called Hanok, and people love them. This is because through mass media, people regarded Hanok as a beautiful house, so they gained perspectives on keeping tradition.
