People have different opinions whether or not zoos should be banned. Although some assert that keeping animals in cages is cruel, I strongly believe that zoos could bring many positive influences on our society and animals too. This essay will outline the advantages and disadvantages of this issue
To begin with, wild creatures’ innate characteristics would be affected negatively. For example, they might forget how to find habitats and hunt their prey. A lion or cheetah’s natural instinct is to kill and hunt weak animals by strangulation. Unfortunately, the predatory mammals will lose natural characteristics as zoo-keepers provide them with enough food and comfortable living places. Moreover, many animal lovers are fiercely against keeping animals in zoos because animal dignity and rights are invaded severely by human beings. They insist people should let all living beings have the right to live in the nature freely as humans do.
On the other hand, zoos would contribute to educating people. It is true that people can be exposed to diverse learning through books and the Internet. However, visits to zoos would lead the public to gain direct and in-depth knowledge. Besides, children should be taught that living creatures on the earth are very important and valuable. Furthermore, artificial habitats seem the last shelter for endangered animals like pandas and elephants. This is because, even if the police force cracks down on smuggling animals and poaching, illegal hunting is still prevailing worldwide. In addition, various species in zoos can attract vast number of tourists. Thus, it can help the country invigorate the economy.
In conclusion, despite the significance of keeping animals’ instinct and dignity, I still think zoos should keep animals to provide education. Also we should build more zoos to protect endangered species from extinction.(293 words)
