People have different opinions on whether or not primary school students should learn a second language. Regarding this, some assert that early learning in a second language has significant drawbacks. However, I strongly believe that it is beneficial because it helps children learn a foreign language more quickly, and follows the trend of globalization. This essay will outline the advantages and disadvantages of this issue.
To begin with, early foreign language education is vital because students in primary school are more adapt at accepting new languages than those in secondary school. It is evident that young pupils’ brain is very flexible to learn new subjects, and would be programmed and progress to get knowledge. As a result, they are able to master new languages easily just like native speakers.
Moreover, children in primary school can experience different cultures earlier than adolescents. As they would expose dissimilar cultures and languages in their childhood, they might be lenient and tolerant to people who have dissimilar background. Besides, as the trend of the world increasingly being globalised seems impossible to reverse. Since they are proficient at learning several languages, they would keep a step ahead of other competitors in the world.
However, early learning in a foreign language has adverse effects on children in primary school. Although they master the words rapidly, forcing them to take a foreign language class will not ensure mastery of the subject. In addition, if children, who are demotivated, will not study the subject, compared to secondary school students, understanding fully how important learning foreign languages are for their future.
In conclusion, even if early foreign language education has some negative aspects, people should encourage young children to learn new languages, which allow them to become competitive globally. Therefore, children should be taught a second language as early as possible. (312 words)
