There is an argument whether or not voluntary community service should be mandatory part of high school’s curriculums. I would argue that working as a volunteer would have positive impact on our local community and students to some extent.
To begin with, working for non-profit organization such as charity and government owed company improves overall quality of community service. Since these services often require a number of skilled people, it is quite beneficial if many students are engaged. For example, pupils who have a certain talent in swimming can contribute skill to those who are in need. At the same time, those students who have given their skills also learn about how to be a good member of community. Therefore, it would be advantageous for both students and services.
On the other hand, some people oppose to the unpaid works because of their time being wasted. They insist that adolescent period is extremely important for high school student in academic perspective. If students are involved in these services for long time, they will struggle with a lack of financial outcome, as well as poor academic performances. This is particularly a case for students who are without financial support from their parents. Consequently, their contribution would bring adverse effects for themselves.
In conclusion, although there are some drawbacks with engaging in unpaid community services, it seems to me that the advantages outweigh disadvantages only if students feel free to do this. It is probably better choice if they chose these services voluntarily.
