I am going to tell you the changes of the art field in the era of globalisation. When Internet technology was first applied in the context of museums, some people in the field spoke excitedly about how the Web could be used to create on-line virtual museums. No need to go to Paris to visit the Louvre, or New York to visit MOMA: people would be able to visit them from the comfort of their own homes. There are limitations in time and place when people visit the physical museum. For example, if you go to Paris to visit the Louvre from Korea, you have to fly in a plane over 11 hours and you have to buy a ticket. Moreover, if you want to see all of collections there, you have to stay in Paris for 3~4 days. And then, you have to fly in a plane over 11 hours to return. And you need about £1,300 only for fling. Eventually, it is required about 1 weeks and a lot of travelling expenses. While, there is not limitation on an online museum. The visitors in the physical museum can generally browse that objects are carefully arranged by experts such as artist or curator to appear in the context of other, related objects generally related by location and timer. While, the visitors in an online museum can browse any objects without limitation on the number of objects even if they have to search objects directly. In addition, some online museum such as the Louvre and the Saatchi gallery offer the personal space to the visitors, thus they can create own collection individually. The visitor’s role is changing. They do not just browse objects but collect objects and create new context in their own places. In other words, they are changing from passive visitor to active visitor. Moreover, the online museums help their visitors to understand objects, artists and art histories by the education programs. However, the online museum has one big weakness. it is clear that no representation on a computer screen, no matter how high the resolution, could ever substitute for an encounter with a real object, physical museums also have certain built-in limitations. The advantage of the physical museum is obviously that its objects, being physical, can be experienced directly although perhaps behind glass, unlike objects in an on-line museum, which are representations of physical objects. To sum up, the positive aspect of the online museum is that the visitors can communication with art works by accessing the museum any time anywhere without of time and space. However, it also has the negative aspect that it may reduce the chances of human response toward the work for it rather obstructs the direct experience along with the question whether experiencing art work through online would truly establish the relationship between the spectator and the work. The online museum plays a role to make arts to be popularised even if it has a weak point. |
