Nowaday, it is easily observed that many countries' educational system has considered a foreign language as a priority subject at the primary shool level. From Western to Asian countries, it seems to be a trend to learn international languases from the early age. There are evidently clear reasons for this. Some experts, however, object this trend in the mean time. I will discuss both benefits and drawbacks in this essay.
On the one hand, people argue that learning foreign languages at elementary school has negative effect on mother tongue. When children strat learning how to write and read their own language, it could be a huge obstacle to learn other languages at the same time. According to the survey conducted by UNESCO, it is proven that children who begin learning more than two languages at the young age tend to show that they cannot fully understand about the meaning of words and their own culture, and that a lack of using vocabulary.
On the other hand, some people assert that it is indispensable to speak other languages fluently in this globalized period and that beginning to learn foreign languages from the yonger age can be easier and more effective to comprehend the structure of that language. More than that, if children have the knowledge of other languages, undoubtedly numorous opportunities to study abroad are given and by that chance, young generation are able to enhance both their academical and practical expeirence. Last but not least, it is not unusual thesedays to see university students struggle against learning foreign languages before obtaining a job. I certainly believe that if they began to practice those other languages from elementray school, they would not spend their time and money for it.
To conclude, I partly understand the opinion that is concerned of learning foreign language at elementary school, but I strongly believe that the benefit of learning international languages earlier level outweighs disadvantages and there are more advantages not only to individuals but to the society as a whole. |
