▶ Your Answer :
A debate over how the government should
spend its tax revenue is always heated one. Some argue that public funding
should be spent more on nourishing the arts and culture, while others argue
that there should be more government subsidies to education. In a personal
perspective, I would say that public funding to education should come first than
the arts and culture.
Admittedly, it is true that the government
should support the arts and culture in many ways as they have positive
influences on our society. In some ways, the arts and culture can be compared
to children in that neither cannot mature without continuous support. The
restoration of the Sistine Chapel is a case in point. The restoration not only
preserved the great masterpiece by Michelangelo, but also gave artists the opportunity
to learn and utilize the techniques of the Renaissance. If it were not for
government subsidies, people would lose chances to get intellectual nourishment
they need by enjoying a beautiful work of art. As it can be seen, it is clear
that the government should support the arts and culture to some extent.
During the past few decades, there has been
a dramatic shift in the role of education. As the size of a family becomes
smaller and the number of women working outside home increases constantly,
formal schooling has begun to undertake much of the roles which were once those
of a family. According to a recent research by British Columbia University, The
time primary and secondary school students spend in school has gradually
increased from seven hours to thirteen hours over the past ten years. This
result means that education should make students learn moral and social skills
as well as obtain academic knowledge by allowing them to interact with peers,
teachers, and also giving group assignments.
Moreover, the foundation students learn
from formal schooling can be applied to almost every area where they will be
involved after graduation. The knowledge students has will be used to further develop
themselves and also the fields they work. Therefore, we cannot overstress that
education should be utmost priority in public funding.
In conclusion, the government should fund
both culture an education as they are one of the most important element in
modern society. However, I believe that education should receive a greater
focus than the arts and culture as education provides the foundation for other
areas including the arts and culture.
