My decision to study jazz piano was not a spontaneous decision. I wasn’t inspired by a TV show, there was no thundering voice from heaven, and no near-death experience that convinced me to study jazz piano. I have decided to go to college and study jazz piano only after several years of careful deliberation. Now, my goal is to study jazz and become a jazz musician. At the risk of sounding conceited (which is certainly not my objective), I will state the reasons why I believe I can succeed in college and bring diversity to my future. I know that I will excel in college because I am a goal-oriented and committed person. I set goals and I do my best to accomplish them. Since I was 14, I dreamed about playing jazz music. America is the origin of jazz music. I found it necessary to study English before study jazz, which proved very hard. In addition, I always hoped to study abroad and broaden my horizons, and America is the best place for me. My parents disagreed with this decision, but I’m proud to say that during an year I spent in the United States as an exchange student, I received recognition as a high honor class student. I never gave up my English course, though I struggled continually with reading. I was never afraid to get some extra help from my teachers and friends after school to catch up with my classmates. Often, I have to cut my free time or sleep to finish my assignment, though it never discouraged me. At the same time, I also was a accompanist of school chorus, and a pianist of school jazz band. Not only will I work hard at college, but I will also bring diversity to my school. I grew up in Korea, have lived in korea for sixteen years and I went to U.S. for an year. This has greatly broadened my perspective of the music beyond most of my peers and has taught me to adapt different colors of music. I have experienced both Asian and Western music and can understand the culture of Asians and Westerners. Moreover, surving on a worship band and school jazz band has strengthened my musical sense. Studying the classic music has sharpened my piano technique. Living in two different country has exposed me to different modes of thought and helps me to understand variety of music. Versatility has proven useful in music and social relationship and will aid me when I am a college student and future jazz pianist. |
