Someone said the age of book is past, the info will be presented by video, computer, TV, film. Others think the book and the written words will be necessary for spread info and complete education. Discuss both sides and give your opinion. |
There are many people who prefer new media such as the Internet and cable TV shows in aspect of searching for information. Most of them insist that books are old-fashioned and too slow to catch up with updated news. However, I firmly believe that the importance of printed text has not faded away with its unique advantages. To some extent, contemporary media like the web must be convenient media tool in the aspect of time and easy access to information. For example, if you type a key word onto a search engine like ‘Google’, thousands of results would be displayed in no time. This means that you do not have to browse the shelves of a bookstore to get information. Besides, using computer or TV is more economical than buying books. What you need is just around $20 connection fee and the rest huge amount of knowledgeable data is almost free. Even though those cutting-edge media have various advantages, compared with books, those media have some fatal drawbacks. First, the quality of sound-and-image-oriented-data is poorer than that of traditional printed texts. To be specific, most web-based knowledge is uploaded by general people, not experts. That’s why its reliability is not as convinced as books. Moreover, contrary to the general opinion, it is very hard for you to pick up information what you look for as it shows too much data. In addition to the role of information, books have played a great role for children in the field of education. Many reports have shown that reading is a perfect education gadget especially for kids. Reading fairy tales and biographies can enhance reading, writing, and speaking, not to speak of knowledge acquisition. Another good point is that spending a lot of time on reading texts helps children strengthen their thinking ability, problem solving, and creativity, and widen their view. Last but not least is that most books are educational and informative. However, many parents and teachers prevent young people from accessing to TV or the Internet as its data includes too much sexual or violent information. In conclusion, although today’s new media has it own advantages like time-saving and fast update, a number of people firmly believe that the era of paper-based information would not disappear as its powerful role can not be replaced by the Internet, TV, or movie. |
