Some people think museums should be enjoyable places to attract and entertain people. Others think the purpose of musuem is edcate, not entertain. Discuss. |
It is true that general people regard museums as very boring places becaue people do not feel pleasant from watching historical heritage over windows. That's why many people insist that museums need to change as more entertaining places. However, contrary to these advocates, I firmly believe that museums should be places to preserve historical artifacts as they were and to educate our history to the posterity with the follwoing reasons.
If we make museums enjoyable places like amusement parks, it is evident that the drawbacks would far outweigh the benefits. Firstly, if those noble places allow people to get access to valuable assets through hands-on exhibition or trying on them, people may be pleased for a while. This change could bring more people to museums, and museums would be happy as they can collect more enterance fees. It looks both sides win. However, let's see the negative side. What if some reckless visitors vandalize a 500-year-old historical pot? Can you accept the sacrifice of that important asset to give silly people a moment pleasure. Once we approve people to make a fun with the remains, it is inevitable that we lose our history because they must be defaced, destroyed and worn out.
In addition, museums like 'Korea Motor Show' may interrupt people who want to appreciate our ancestors' splendid works and to study history. In my opinion, many people seem to want to museums to be commercial exhibitions shows. Museums, especially public ones, have special obligation. They are non-profit organization and established to keep a country's tresures. In contrast, exhibition shows are eager to catch your eyes with lots of pleasures like giving out presents, sexy models, and fantastic graphics to make a profit. In other words, the main purpose of museums is to convey the remains to young generation, to educate history, and to preserve them as they were. By contrast, that of commercial shows are to make a profit. With these reasons, museums do not have to make an effrot to give a temporary pleasure.
In short, changing museums for diversion-oriented places must be short-sighted approach with reasons I have discussed above. We have to keep in mind their main role. They are established not to give emotional pleasure but to educate and to hand down our history. These attributes are the most important factors when we visit museums. |
