It is irrefutable that the trend of delivering children in one’s old age is widespread in many countries, especially in developed ones. In this essay, the influences on the society and families as well as the reasons will be illustrated.
Two primary reasons associated with the tendency can be found. Firstly, higher education of women is fairly influential. For example, women who have been through tertiary-level education have come to pass their twenties, expending a great amount of money on education and dreaming of gaining career prospects after graduation. This thus contributes them to pursue, find, and maintain the rewarding jobs, postponing pregnancy until their 30s. Secondly, expectations for higher living standards have the impact on late pregnancy. Because young couples in developed countries have enjoyed their wealthy backgrounds thanks to their hard-working parents during the last few decades, they feel the need to obtain the corresponding living standards before having children. Therefore, the phenomenon of procrastinating pregnancy is prevailing in some countries.
Various changes of a family can be found as a result of late delivery. For example, the number of children in one family has been noticeably reduced by just one or two children and thus parents can put more efforts and expenditures into their few children’s nurturing and education. However, some sufferings of parents can also be expected to occur such as conflicts from a bigger generation gap and physical difficulties of childrearing at an old age. Meanwhile, the total population of laboring youths has exponentially dropped in these societies because of the decreased number of children and infertility caused by late pregnancy, thus inducing a labor shortage.
In conclusion, due to the reasons caused by a higher level of women’s education and expectations for high living standards, people tend to have children later in their life. Some consequences from this phenomenon can have both positive and negative influences on the life of a family and society.
