Some people argue that universities should maintain equal
proportion of gender when each faculty accepts new students for the sake of realizing
equality between men and women. I disagree with this opinion due to some
aspects.
To begin with, several subjects have its unique trait which is suitable for man or woman’s characteristics. It is clear that personal aptitude on study has nothing to do with gender equality. Even
though some of specific major have quite lopsided distribution of men or women,
this kind of subjects tend to be preferred and well fitted to one side of
gender. In this occasion, if universities adopt a quota system to maintain the
equality, they could not be able to seek for original purpose towards their
education and research.
On top of that, the fixed number of gender’s percentage would ironically infringe liberal rights to pursuit studies for all students. Nursing science is a typical
example that mainly women prefer to study, while only minor male group choose
this subject as their major in the university. In this case, even if more
female students want to apply for this subject, but if there is a restriction
of female numbers, they should reluctantly make concessions for their chance to
male students who may not have much interest to study or work in this area. In addition, the male candidate might relatively take good advantages in a competition with minor
candidates of men. Therefore, universities should provide all candidates the right to
choose their major as they are desperate to study regardless of gender. Moreover, this is
for universities to embrace more competitive and intrigued students in their
own area, and to foster academic needs and momentum of the students.
In conclusion, there is no doubt that gender
equality has to be prevailed in every field of society. However, all decision
makers in the community would be obliged to take each condition and the
circumstance into consideration, in particular, when it comes to education and
students’ aspiration for study. Given that opportunities are provided to all
people evenly, compulsory systems such as balancing gender proportion of each
subject in universities will not be required to consider.
