Q : Studying English in an English-speaking country is the best way to learn the language. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? |
There are a lot of countries in the world, each of which has its own language. English was just one of the various languages, however, it is becoming as an international language in global age. According to this belief, English is considered the essential language to learn at the expense of considerable amount of cost, time, and effort.
Due to the pressure from English, quite a few people have been facing the same problem, fluent command of English. The seriousness of the stress is more especially in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) countries than that of in ESL(English as a Second Language). Under EFL situation like Korea, generally speaking, most people seldom have chances to speak English unless they are asked to show the way to somewhere by a foreigner on the crowded street. In order to free themselves from English, they have no alternative to be intentionally in a English-speaking surroundings, such as going to any English conversation institute, gathering together in a just English-speaking coffee shop, or making friends with kind foreigners, and so forth. Despite the enthusiasm for English in EFL, it is strongly believed that the most effective way to learn English is to study English in an English-speaking country. But, in my opinion, it’s just a misbelief.
Language is just one part of life. It has to be acquired naturally in life, not learnt or studied. Learning and studying a language means not more than analyzing the language system, like grammar, pronunciation, and letters. That is, it means knowing the language. Moreover, the primary purpose of any languages is communication. Communication could happen in any social context, whether artificial or natural. The important thing is self-motivation and infinite interest in the language. Place doesn’t matter. English is not an exception. |
