The distribution
of internet has made it easier for people to gain information about culture and
history, which had been only accessible by visiting museum in the past. Thus, some
even argue that museums are not necessary in present day. I believe that it is a
wrong idea.
Admittedly, the function
and significance of museums is not as the same as before since Internet first
emerged and became available to most people around the world. It is undeniable
that knowledge about historical facts and cultural heritages are readily obtainable
through Internet. For example, people can easily see the pictures of cultural assets
and learn about them through websites, without having to visit the actual place.
In other words, time and effort, which otherwise would have been spent visiting
museums, can be saved by surfing the internet at home.
Nevertheless, I strongly
believe that the role and function of museums still exists. Museums are not a
useless place. They are the only facilities where people can directly experience
and feel the historical and cultural artifacts in person, and this is completely
different experience from that of Internet which contains only texts and pictures.
Namely, knowledge of culture and history is best acquired not through superficial
letters and videos through internet but through actual encounter with them in
places like museums.
In conclusion, although
the advent of Internet has engendered some doubts about whether museums are
needed, I think they still have their own function and role which cannot be
replaced by Internet. |
