Your Answer ▼ It is a common belief that students need to be able to choose whether they attend classes or not freely. However, I firmly believe that attending classes should be mandatory for university students, because it is a matter of responsibility and many aspects of students can be evaluated only by meeting professors face to face.
To begin with, students have to attend their classes because taking lectures is like an (기존 표현도 문법상 문제는 없는데, 이쪽이 더 깔끔해서 바꿔드렸습니다.) a kind of appointment between a professor and students. If students are allowed to skip their classes freely whenever they want, there will be some cases that the number of students is not enough for the professors to give a lecture in planned ways. Sometimes they will have to go back home without any previous notification. (여기의 they 가 교수인지 학생인지 정확하게 밝혀주세요~) Those situations are not welcomed in any society, and the student who do like that a pupil who acts like that will be regarded as a rude and irresponsible person.
On top of that, professors need more chances to look at their discipline closely, to know them well. Even though regular exams have been the most common way for evaluating a student, these days the importance of overall evaluation is increasing. Many teachers want to score their students in various ways to improve the fairness for their scoring and encourage students to be versatile. For example, one of my professors gave a bonus point to students who participated actively in his lecture, to praise their fever and diligence. Like this, professors can catch out their disciplines' ability in more various way if students attend classes consistently.
To sum up, attending classes is not only an basic appointment but also a good chances for teachers to appraise students' performance. For these reasons, university students should not miss their classes and have to attend it constantly. |
