Nowadays, people are increasingly exposed to higher sugar consumption. Some people argue that it is necessary for the government to control forcefully to decrease the over-consumption while others feel that it has to be left to the individual's choice. This essay will examine both views and explain why it is more beneficial for the government to step in and implement required policies to change population's sugar eating habits.
Certainly, some argue that individuals own a right to choose what to eat for themselves. The reason they choose to go after foods or drinks containing high sugar level despite the fact that it can cause detrimental health issues is that their pleasure of eating such food is far more satisfying than keeping themselves healthy. For example, carbohydrates, especially sugars, when consumed, stimulate the brain releasing happy hormone. When feeling depressed, some people choose to eat sweets just to feel sugar-high. In other words, their own decision on choosing what to eat while knowing the possible consequences should not be interfered by a third party.
Despite this, others, myself included, would like to encourage the government to take action against excessive sugar consumption. Indeed, the medical cost for treating diseases that are correlated to high level sugar consumption such as obesity and diabetes is increasing each year. Compared to the last year, the treatment cost of diabetes has gone up to 10%. Ultimately, keeping the citizen healthy falls within the realm of the responsibility the government holds as it creates financial and demographic benefits.
In conclusion, in a perspective of human rights, it might seem fair to let people be responsible for their eating habits regardless of the possible detrimental outcomes. Nevertheless, the importance of citizen's right on choosing what to eat is far outweighed by the crucial responsibility of the government in keeping the population health. |
