It is thought by
some that traffic and transportation problems could be addressed by encouraging
people to live in urban areas rather than rural areas. I completely disagree
with this statement.
In Seoul, Korea, traffic
congestion is such a serious matter that commuters are distressed on their way
to work on crowded subway or bus in rush hour, which is the result of the undesirable
trend that most people move to live in the capital city because of almost all
the job opportunities and cultural facilities are concentrated in Seoul. Therefore,
the very idea that traffic problems can be solved by having people live in cities
instead of suburbs is only making its traffic problem worse. In other words, the more
people living in the countryside decide to move to Seoul, the worse the quality of
public transportation would become.
It is true that traffic
and transportation system is falling behind that of urban areas. Nevertheless, the
government encouragement of having people in rural areas to move to urban
cities cannot be said to be a fundamental solution. Rather, the government
should take measures to improve the traffic system of countryside. For example,
they should spend and assign the significant national budget, which otherwise
would have been spent on cities, to the improvement of transportation system in
rural areas.
In conclusion, I
believe that the current traffic and transportation problems of rural areas can
be dealt with by the government putting an effort to improve them. |
