It is common belief that violent criminals' information should be
protected on community. However, there a persuasive agreement that the private
information of offenders have to broadcast the public to safeguard social
community members.
On the other hand, announcing criminals' information would lead
to secondary damage to their family. This is because, especially, it is
not difficult for people who utilize the Internet to find a specific data not
only criminals' one but also their family due to developed Internet system in
Korea. To be specific, this belief was realized recently when my friend was
ostracized at school after her father's criminal records were released. After
that, although she did not related to father's crime, she had to stop
school for a long time due to mistreatment. In this regard, people could assert
that the riskiness in broadcasting offenders' private information. Nevertheless, it is more important that to announce the private
data of crime to the public to protect social life. By doing so, a
repetition crime can be protected. A good example of this occurred in the
United States, there is a provision known as 'Megan's Law'. It is requires the
sex offender's information available to the general public. Because of this,
criminals are more monitored closely from not only police, but also members of
community. Ultimately, the rate of sex offender has been decreased by 30%
points during the last decade in the United States. In this regard, to inform
data about offender's private records should be a must.
In conclusion, some people say assert that there is
no need to publicize the private information about crime due to secondary
damage. However, I personally believe that the public should be aware of
criminals' information to stay our secure life.
