Topic ▼ Some people believe that arts do not improve people's lives. Therefore, government should not spend money on it. To what extent do you agree or disagree? |

Your Answer ▼
It
is sometimes argued that the government should not expend its tax money in arts
because it is not helpful to improve people’s lives. However, I strongly
believe that government’s role is important in promoting the arts as they have
positive impacts on one’s life in various ways.
To
begin with, it is a common belief that the government’s expenditure in arts is
not effective due to its characteristics, having relatively low relationship
with people’s basic necessity. That is to say, spending on meeting people’s
basic needs such as education and health should be prioritized, considering the
budget limitation. In fact, expenditures in basic health and education take the
biggest share in the government’s budget plan in many countries. Even though it
seems reasonable explanation, it is flawed.
I
am of the opinion that the arts can improve quality of lives significantly, and
the government should pay attention to the art promotion. It is mainly because
arts can influence one’s emotion in a positive way. According to a recent
research, people tend to easily relieve their stress while appreciating art
works such as music. This shows the evidence how arts affect people’s lives
directly. In addition, arts also can influence people indirectly, by contributing
to the growth of tourism and culture industry. For example, as the K-pop music
became popular worldwide, the export in that field rose rapidly recently. This
can lead to an increase in tax revenues and more expenditures in meeting basic
needs of people.
In brief, the government should increase its
investment in arts, in order to assist people from the perspective of psychology
and economy. |
