It is a common belief that the personal information of criminals should be kept private. However, there is a more persuasive argument that this information should be broadcast to the public to keep society safe.
On the one hand, a majority of people argue that publicizing the information of criminals, including name, age, and address, invades human right and moreover, it has negative side effects. First of all, if the information of criminals is opened to the public, it is clear that the family members of the criminal could get a negative view from people around them. Even though they did not commit a crime, they will feel guilty and also embarrassed. For instance, in Korea, there was a guy, who committed suicide because his father was a violent criminal, which means his face and personal information was opened to the public. (이쪽을 자살 앞으로 보내주세요~) He could not live a normal life without people's unfavourable attention.
Nevertheless, there is an argument that the information of criminals has to be opened to the public. Since criminals can be a threat to society, they needed to be supervised by the police and the public. Many people are worried worries about the second conviction caused by offenders, and a majority of people thinks, that to lower the second conviction rate, the criminals have to be scrutinized all the time. For example, there is the a website, in which everyone can access and view all the sex offenders in their neighbourhood, specifically the criminals' face and what are they charged for, along with their current addresses. This way, it can This website has helped prevent the crime and also secure the community will feel secure.
To sum up, in terms of human rights, publicizing the information of criminals might cause another problem and should be protected, but I strongly believe that for the whole society's safety and prevention of crimes, the public has a rights to know the criminals' information. |
