It is often argued that in sports, despite of athletes’ bad behaviours on or off the ground, as long as their perform is a phenomenon, their unethical decisions are not effecting on the play. In this essay, I will show why I strongly disagree with this statement.
First of all, in team sports such as soccer, basketball and baseball one player’s bad behaviour has detrimental impacts on their teamwork. It means while an athlete performs brilliantly, she or he does not coordinate and play by her or himself, it is not as effective as when all the team members perfectly harmonised. Additionally, off the ground, if there is a discord between team players, it can distract their performance. For example, during a soccer training for a match, if a player is not assisted from other co-players because of that player’s bad attitude towards other players, it could eventually distract their actual performance.
Moreover, sports have a huge fan-following and their fans tend to mimmic their behaviour even though when it is a harmful action. In detail, youngsters who are not fully able to justify sport celebrities actions and fans could imitate or support their sport celebrities' actions whether it is a moral behaviour, or unethical behaviour. This above statement could be found in adult's actions since when people have a bias they are likely to loose their function of judgement on the bias's decision.
In conclusion, professional athletes should act morally and carefully both on and off the ground because their harmful attitude can damage their team bond and their fans are willing to imitate their actions.
