Many experts are concerned that children could be selfish
when they make an own decision about daily matters such as what they eat, wear
and enjoy. However, others think that this freedom of choice is significant for
them. I will discuss two ideas and suggest my own opinion below.
On the one hand, many people argue that it is a great way
for children to make decisions about their matters from the perspective of
education. As many parts of people's desire are constructed by mass media, they
say that it is hard to know what they really want even until they pass away.
Thus, it would be helpful for children to be used to thinking, learning and
acting to achieve their own wishes in order to make them mature adults who know
their particular desire in the future.
On the other hand, some people maintain that it is not
beneficial for young people to provide them with too much freedom regarding their
everyday matters because it could make them internalize consumer ideology. This
ideology may identify them as only consumers, limiting their views towards
whole society. Since all goods production systems are tied to the world,
consuming some items illegally made by the underdeveloped countries may be not
moral activity for the world. If children cannot be educated about this social
background and keep buying anything they wish, they might contribute to the
injustice of global economy chains.
In conclusion, providing children with the freedom of
choices would have the educational positive effect, at the same time, would
have the negative effect from the perspective of global economy. I believe that
the latter is more important than the former. This is because the given free
choice frame itself for children would prevent them to broaden their horizons. |
