In Korea, there were several Olympics and Worldcups in histroy. The first was Seoul Olympic in 1988 and to prepare the event, almost everyone was involved in making the city clean and some of them even learned how to act properly toward foreign visitors. As a result, the Olympic affected so much on our country's global image and spread its name worldwide. Travel was spurred, people got proud of their country and everything was so booming under the name of Korea. However, some people were threatened to get removed, especially when they were living in very poor conditioned houses. So many cardboard houses were destroed for looking good to other countries. People lost their living foundation. Of course it was about 30 years ago so people are protected by laws and human rights are usually respected the most, however, I am not sure it will never happen in any other countries in the world, especially if one of developing countries won the right of hosting to improve their reputation in the world. Also one of the bad impacts of hosting an international sports events is the stadiums built for the events are not effectively used afterwards. They are utilized for exhibits, practice and so on but it takes really a long time to make up all the investment by using it as the public exhibitions. Thus, what I would like to say is that I understand hosting's pros and cons but am willing to focus on dark aspects. I am not saying it shouldn't be held but I believe being aware of side effects will make the event healthier and more meaningful. |
