The
chart illustrates how much changed the rates of households using electrical
appliances and the numbers of hours in housework per week from 1920 to 2019.
Overall,
the usage of washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner increased.
Accordingly, times used for housework significantly plummeted.
First
of all, the percentage of refrigerator in 1920 was almost 0 percent, but all
households were using that from 1980 and remained 100 percent until 2019, with vacuum
cleaner reaching the 100 percent in the years 2000 and 2019. Although the
washing machine started with the largest rates for 40%, it took a slight decline
during 1960-1980, opposed to the rise of the vacuum cleaner. However, it recovered
from 1980, and reached a little bit higher than 70% in 2019.
While
the percentage of electrical appliance usage was going higher, working hours
for housework went down, having a slight stop between 1980 and 2000. In 1920 people
spent 50 hours a week for washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning, but at
the end of the chart in the year 2019, it became one-fifth of that. |
