It is a common belief that due to the development of society, the worth of the extended family has considerably weakened. However, there is a more persuasive argument that the extended family is still important since it has many benefits than a small family.
These days, it is true that the size of the family became relatively small, furthermore, the worth of family has changed too. A majority of people move to the city to find a better life. In the city, most of the families are not as big as a family in the past or rural area. Naturally, with the urbanization, the traditional extended family system is breaking up in favour of the nuclear family. Although the size of the family became smaller, some say they can more focus on their career. Many people leave their home town to seek more opportunities, which are mainly in the big city. For example, unlike in the past, many Koreans leave their family and decide to go abroad for their own purpose, such as, for a better lifestyle or educational purpose. This shows that the extended family is no longer important compared to the past, which people tend to choose their personal goals over devoting to their family.
Nevertheless, I believe the extended family is still important in modern society. Being a member of an extended family means spending time with elders, not only grandparents can taking care of their grandchildren, but it also means grandchildren can learn a lesson from elders. In this busy world, many families going through a tough time, such as both of their parents have to go work. In this case, grandparents can be with the kids. In the extended family, many people get help from family members. In addition, in a large family, one can develop their personality in a various way, since there are staying with a different generation, it is evident that it could teach kids about the past and learn a valuable lesson. Interacting with various people can widen one's thought and also learn to respect them.
To sum up, even though some people argue that extended family lost its value because of the change in society make people focus more on themselves, I strongly believe that the extended families are still very important due to grandparent's role and learning life lesson. |
