In recent years, many media experts point
out that excessively specific descriptions of crimes portrayed by mass media
could have negative effects on society so that they should be limited. I firmly
agree with this idea for two reasons.
Firstly, the detailed representation of
crimes would lead to other crimes. This is because future criminals would learn
the way of crimes and even people who do not plan to commit crime would be
motivated to do it by gaining the detailed information of crime from mass
media. By accepting it, they could not only easily follow the crime precesses
but also develop the methods in order not to be found by polices. Therefore, I
believe that newspapers and televisions should provide people with only simple
information related to crimes.
In addition, some descriptions of crimes
that media show would cause a negative effect on not only victims but also
people who have a similar experience. This is because the media representation
could remind them of bad memory regarding the crime. For example, some victims
who went through the physical violence could unconsciously recall the time when
they were damaged and feel extreme fear again by watching the detailed
represenations of similar crimes on the TV news. Thus, I think that mass media
should restrict their contents, when they deal with sensitive criminal issues
to prevent victims from mental problems.
In conclusion, I strongly agree with the
opinion that televisons and newspaper should try to select and carefully represent
crime information. This is because it would encourage criminals to commit other
crimes and be harmful for mental conditons of victims.
