To begin with, one area of negative aspects that people should be aware of is addiction. In modern society, people usually overuse the media such as the Internet or cellular phone more than necessary. Media obsession results in not only people being incapable of managing their use and time, but also a loss of their productivity and a neglect of priorities.
In addition to the disadvantage above, frequency of violence on the media, especially on satellite TV is another danger. As satellite TV comparably has a more variety of channels than the original TV in the past due to the advances in media technology, audiences are more likely to be exposed to violence. The problem is that violence begins to be regarded as frequent occurrence by audiences and then they are gradually accustomed and insensitive to aggressive actions and even committing crimes. Young generations, in particular, who are vulnerable, can replicate the behaviour on TV, that is, their personalities can be transformed to be offensive and antisocial. Additionally, the mass media tends to offer information that is relevant to crimes during broadcasting news or on the Internet.
Conversely, criticisms about positive effects on the development of the media suggest informative function as an example. The new types of media encourage people to receive information immediately and conveniently. There are, for instance, educational or instructional programs ranging from documentaries to financial programs. To add to them, people can realize be aware of what happens at the moment in the global world thanks due to the announcements provided on the Internet and PDA.
In conclusion, people, who are surrounded by the mass media in their everyday life, have been dramatically affected in negative ways, namely addiction and exposure to violence, even though there are some advantages which are relatively weak. As a result, it is highly recommended that governments should establish policies to prevent these negative developments.
