It is believed that many languages are
extinct faster than ever before in recent days. Some people claim that it might
be a positive change since fewer languages make life simpler. Despite the
advantages it would result in, however, I think there would be more negative
effects.
To begin with, the diminishing number of
languages can be beneficial because it would lower language barriers.
Considering that people who speak different languages are going through
communication troubles, it is true that using a universal language has many more merits compared to having several
languages. For example, the government would be able to provide a unified public health or education system and the business
partners originating from different language
backgrounds would find it far easier to address opinions in terms of some
important deals, if they speak the same language.
On the other hand, a language is deemed as
a mirror that reflects ways of living, thoughts and customs of a certain group
of people. Each word might imply their own
history and culture. For example,
‘hakuna matata’ which means ‘everything is going to be okay’ in Swahili language would definitely represent how easygoing East African people are. By exposing to new languages,
people learn a wide range of cultures and become
generous to accept diversity. Since it has been much more important to embrace
differences in a multicultural society,
languages play a significant role for global citizens without a doubt.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that
every single language is meaningful no matter how minor they are, despite such good points as simplicity and convenience that fewer languages can cause.
