The tables represent how much Fairtrade-labelled coffee and
bananas were sold in five different European nations respectively in 1999 and in
2004.
Overall, the sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee increased in
each country over the five-years period. On the contrary, while more Fairtrade-labelled
bananas were sold in the UK, Switzerland, and Denmark in 2004 than in 1999, the
sales of bananas dropped in Belgium and Sweden.
Looking at the tables more closely, one can see that Fairtrade-labelled
coffee was sold the most in Switzerland and the sales was three million euros in
1999. However, the sales of coffee in the UK surged dramatically by 18.5
million euros and exceeded the sales amount in Switzerland in 2004. The sales of
coffee in Switzerland were doubled in the same year. In the other three nations,
the sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee rose slightly. In terms of the sales of Fairtrade-labelled
bananas, it was overwhelmingly high in the UK than the other four countries in 1999
and in 2004, at 15 million euros and 47 million euros respectively, and the
sales in 2004 was approximately triple the sales in 1999. The sales of bananas
in Switzerland and Denmark in 1999 was one million euros and 0.6 million euros
respectively, however, the sales amount in each nation skyrocketed significantly
in 2004. On the other hand, the sales of Fairtrade-labelled bananas in Belgium
and Sweden had roughly halved during the same period.
