More adults can work at home and
children can study at home because technology has become accessible and
cheaper. Is this a positive or negative development?
Today, It is observed that a lot of parents started working from home, while their kids also kickstarted home-schooling as technological progress leans toward home-oriented development. In my opinion, the status quo seems mainly negative.
To begin with, with the development of technology, people do not have to leave home to go to work and children also can learn well from home due to ever-growing convenient programs within computers. When it comes to workplace, it can be an obvious fact that the more convenient work environment become towards home-based work, the more people are likely to get efficient in work since they can focus solely on their work without external stressful factor such as a relationship with a boss. Likewise, children can be more direct educational supported by parents at the point which means they get a chance to have much time together. In addition, as technologies such as the internet and television, it has allowed all generations to access a variety of information without putting much effort. They do not need to spend a huge amount of time searching information that they need.
However, this development can cause some negative effects. Firstly, not only adults but also children cannot develop their social interaction skills if they choose to stay at home and work or study without interacting with others. As ZOOM which is a digital platform for virtual meeting become accessible regardless of age or occupation, people are prone to break a link with others because they consider social interaction useless and everything is at their fingertips. Moreover, virtual study environment can result in the gap between the rich and the poor in terms of educational opportunity. Some of students might have to take a class without access to laptop or desktop computer if homeschooling is more popular with virtual class. In other words, this problem could last long due to the gap widening between the students with access to various educational opportunities and those who completely rely on school teachers who are mostly not available.
In conclusion, I believe that telecommuting and homeschooling is a negative development. It seems that both home-based work and study make social interaction deteriorate as well as educational inequality.
