Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement.
================================================================================================
As a person who is currently going through this exact situation while living overseas Overseas and speaking a foreign language for nearly 6 years, I cannot agree more with this statement. However, I would like to mention that it can be different to others who have different personalities, life goals and experiences. Ultimately, I believe that this does cause social and practical issues, and I will outline based on my experience as well as my friends.
First, I think the social problems come from language barriers and cultural differences. Even though I worked in a local business for three years. I, I could not connect well with my colleagues. Workwise, I had never had related an issues, but if someone asked me, if they were are my friends. I couldn’t (줄임말은 풀어써주세요!) say “Yes!” to that question. My view is that the main reason for this was that my English is not fluent as my first language, Korean. Whenever I spoke with my workmates about something personal, serious, sensitive, in-depth conversation, I was afraid to cause any misunderstanding and misconception. Moreover, the more I got to know them I felt there was a huge cultural difference in thoughts and mind-set. I assume that for those reasons many expats get along with other expats from other countries with similar experiences or with people from their home country rather than with local people.
Secondly, there are many practical problems that myself and my friends experienced in language barriers. Many of my friends have working experiences and skills in certain areas. Unfortunately, due to their lack of English ability, many of them are working somewhere that they cannot implement those skills and knowledge or their ability were underestimated in their jobs. Additionally, a lot of people who migrants find it difficult to understand their work rights and entitlements as it is quite complicated. Unlike local people who can easily get up-to-date information for the expats who have limited language skills can be hard to get the right and updated information.
To summarise, people who live overseas where they have to speak a foreign language are facing many difficulties in many aspects. Some of them might going through depression for those reasons, I was the one of them. Therefore I strongly agree with that statement.
