Your Answer ▼ It is a common belief that all students in university should take a course which can provide a path to success in the future. However, there is a more persuasive argument that university students should have freedom to choose the modules. This is because when there is a freedom of choice to study other subjects, such as geography, history, and language, it will help to preserve the culture of a nation and the students can be competitive in the job market as well.
On the one hand, if students are only allowed to take modules which focus on the future, specifically science and technology, this will be beneficial when they want to get a job. In present, there is a steep growth in demand of technology and it is improving everyday. This shows that the society itself, including many organisations around the globe, requires people to have sufficient knowledge and skills on science. Moreover, many organisations seek for fresh graduates who can bring fresh ideas to launch products with cutting-edge technology. For example, students who hold bachelor degree in computer science tend to be employed much more faster and easier compared to business school students and it proves that the current employers favour a person who can use the current technology and has potential to develop it further rather than doing paper works. Thus, if students take modules that concentrate on the future, it will be efficient for the students, as they do not have to waste their time to study above skills after graduation.
Nevertheless, studying various fields for instance, history, geography, and foreign language can be a key for employment and protect the culture. As the students graduating with science degree is increasing, holding an art or humanity degree can make a candidate exceptional and competitive. The world is changing rapidly and many countries around the world are dependent on each other in different industries. An example can be shown by international trade, where Asian countries like Vietnam export rice to European countries including France. Therefore, it is essential for organisations, especially the multinational ones, to recruit staffs who can speak foreign languages. In addition, subjects relating to humanities are also necessities in society as it can be a tool for culture preservation. As mentioned above, the world is emerging through various ways and it is likely to be identical to each other. However, to illustrate, when students learn about the history and origin of the language which are important part of culture, then it can create awareness and the importance of distinct culture can be highlighted. Consequently, the interest bodies like the government would take actions accordingly to keep the culture unique.
In conclusion, while it is apparent that science related subjects can give be useful to university students, it is undeniable that studying modules which are not science related is more useful overall.
