Learning languages requires thinking skills, and now computers with artificial intelligence are better at it than humans. Some people often think that they might not have to learn foreign languages as it is a waste of time, but I believe that there is something that computers cannot understand about human relationships and communication. In this essay, I will discuss the reasons.
Actually, communication is important in relationships between people, and international communication is more important because of the increasing influences of globalisation. It allows many people to express what they are experiencing and what they need the most. Computers can mechanically translate their words but might not be able to understand what they really mean because the systems have nothing to experience and need although they have a long life like human beings.
Also, computers cannot perfectly translate many idioms that can be varied in different countries and cultures. Interpreting them is difficult because they have to link the words and the origins. In the same way, they are not able to make themselves understand new words that are frequently and globally used on the Internet by many users at the moment. This is because computers cannot recognise and feel the change of times of the world.
In conclusion, learning languages should not be discouraged because of the development of intelligent computing systems. As communication is something that works amongst people, computers might not be able to understand the relationships of people and words, and there can be possibilities of misinterpreting. |
