It is a common belief that genetically altered crops can solve food famine and should be promoted, however, there is a more persuasive argument that they can cause environmental issues and require extended research. I am on the side of the latter because it is true that disasters could be evoked and harm the environment.
On the one hand, crops that are genetically transformed could be useful since it can cover a myriad of food shortages. If the regular crops are unavailable, the citizens would not be able to consume enough food to continue their lives. However, by giving an alternative solution with those kind of crops, our world would no longer need to worry about the famine due to the fact that it is possible to create a massive amount of crops that are in need. In the case of Spain, genetically modified crops played a vital role in reviving the nation by providing enough eateries for the citizens in 2000. Although the country was suffering from the famine, the new form of crops were the key to the solution of the famine in Spain.
Nevertheless, there are various consequences that would be fatal for our environment because of the uses of genetically altered crops. In addition, further research would be necessary because it is not fully trustworthy because it has not been the primitive source of crops for a long period of time. It is true that uncountable amount of chemicals are added during the process of generating those modified crops which are harmful to the environment, especially for the soil condition. Recent Study from Seoul National University revealed that the level of soil stability plummeted from 80 percent to 30 percent by using the farming area for genetically modified crops.
To sum up, while it is apparent that lots of issues related to food shortages could be resolved thanks to genetically modified crops, it is undeniable that there would be so many side-effects brought to the world and it is not trustworthy yet |
