The diagram illustrates how a hydroelectric power station generates
electricity. It is a circular process that water from river goes down while
generating electricity to the power station in day and lead
back to the first place at night and electricity is generated by downward flow of water.
Firstly, river water is collected in the high-level reservoir behind the dam. In daytime, the water passes the intake which is only open in day and closed during the night, and runs down to power station through the pipe, generating electricity. After arriving at the power station, the water passes through the reversible turbines operating generator in daytime, and it is collected in low-level reservoir. At this stage of process, the generated electricity goes up to generator and is supplied to people through power lines and national grids.
On the other hand, at night, the water is pumped back along the pipe from the low-level reservoir to the high-level reservoir and river by reversible turbines.
