Q. Some people think that lawbreakers should be sent to prison. However, others think that better talents among those should be made to work. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Most countries around the world are ruled by law, and if a person does something illegitimate, they are sent to prison. People argue that people who committed a crime deserve to be imprisoned, while others maintain that talented criminals should be offered to work. This essay will examine both arguments and discuss my opinion regarding this issue.
On the one hand, those who agree with the imprisonment suggest that criminals should be punished for their unlawful behaviours. If a lawbreaker does not get punished, they will be likely to continue their criminal acts. There is an old saying in Korea, which is “a needle thief becomes a cow thief”. It means that someone who has once committed a crime tends to commit bigger crimes in the future. Thus, adequate penalties should be implemented to who broke the law. In addition, if some offenders get away with their crimes and are made to work, other people might look up to them and copy their criminal acts. Sending criminals to prison will prevent this situation and the increase in the crime rate.
On the other hand, it is believed by some people that outstanding criminals should be hired, and their talent should be used for work. They maintain that the people who broke laws in a smart or talented way are professionals in their fields, and their knowledge and skills can be used effectively. A movie “Catch Me if You Can” which is based on a real story is a good example to illustrate a criminal being offered a job. The main character in the movie was a very smart fraud, and the police had been struggling to catch the man. After many years, he was finally caught, but instead of sentencing years in prison, he was made to work for FBI to detect counterfeit bills. It turned out he had been very useful to the company.
In conclusion, there are arguments with regards to sending talented criminals to prison. My opinion is that people who broke laws should be imprisoned instead of being offered a job. They should be punished for what they have done, and other people should also learn that the right consequences will follow the crimes.
