The table charts illustrate the percentages of university students in the UK who could speak foreign languages besides English in the years 2000 and 2010. In general, it is noticeable that in both years, most of them were able to speak at least one language. We can see an increase in the proportions of students who could speak second and third languages over the 10-year-period. In the year 2000, 80% university students were able to speak foreign languages in addition to English and 20% only spoke English. There was a rise of 5% being able to speak second languages and we can see also an increase, from 10% to 15%, those who were able to speak three languages including English. Looking at the second languages spoken, in 2000, 30% students could speak only Spanish, 15% French, and German at one in ten. By 2010, there was an increase, from 30% to 35%, in the percentage of students speaking only Spanish. British students who were able to only German remained at the same proportions, with 10%, and we can see a fall of 5% in the percentage of French speakers over the period given.
