From the perspective of some people, allocating resources to improving languages of limited speakers is crucial for society. Others, however, hold the view that such idea is a drain on scarce resources. Personally, I find the latter more convincing.
Those who support the idea of spending budget on the language of minority is basically for protecting their culture and identity. The language that they speak is directly related to their nation and community. For example, there are majority of people from various nations immigrated to Canada. When they first arrived to Canada, they certainly needed to communicate to others who can speak same language. So, Canadian gorverment did a variety work for them such as hiring more people who speak other languages, opening foreign language classes for local people and giving chance to meet up with people from home town. The reason why they did was because the government show their respect to immigrant’s identity instead of pushing to understand Canadian culture or use English by force so that new immigrants can adjust to new life easily in Canada.
Nevertheless, I can understand why other people are against those policy for language. I surely believe that people should respect and support the idea of multiculturalism, however, speaking a variety languages at the same place make many important decisions and communications confused. Moreover, the governments and organizations have so much pressure on allocating resources to save languages because of their limited budget. In order to provide more benefits for more people, the government inevitably have to increase the tax. It will lead mass public disapproval on this policy and will cause more trouble for society.
To sum up, while some people have reasons to believe in the protecting languages of smaller group in getting people to preserve their culture, I tend to think that such policy might be concerning issues for society. |
