As the societies become more advanced, lives of people get much more
complexed todays. Especially, it is often said that ordinary people should face
too many moments to choose something endlessly everyday, and I completely agree
with that. Also, I believe that this uncomfortable situation comes mainly from
the two factors: capitalism and advanced technologies.
Capitalism needs endless consumption. In this system, in order to make
consumers to buy something, sellers should create new products and services
forever. In addition, basically there are too many sellers to compete in their
markets, so the sellers always bring out something new and different from other
sellers, because they believe this difference would attract more consumers.
Therefore, we, the ordinary people, are forced to choose too many things, even
though we don't need new products and services actually. As I mentioned, we are
living in a such a economy system in which choices and consumption are very
necessary.
Technology is the other important factor. Especially, the rapid changes
of technologies in communication and transportation makes society more complex
and full of choices. For example, just 50 years ago, most of people could not
travel other continents easily, so they should choose only some domestic resort
for their holidays. However, todays, we can go literally everywhere in the
world if we want to go to by jet planes, also using the Internet, we can gather
much of information about the destination at home.
In conclusion, thanks to todays's technologies and the economy system,
apparently, we have too many options, compared to the past. However, it is an
important question that many choices are always good to people in this complex
modern world. |
