These days, many people learn
foreign languages because of globalization. On the one hand, some people
believe that people learn a foreign language only for their travel or work, but
on the other hand, there are those who insist that people have various reasons
why they should learn a foreign language. I think that the reason why people
learn other countries’ languages depends on their circumstances.
To begin with, learning a
foreign language is the most important thing when people have a plan to
travel to or work in a foreign country. If they do not know the language of the
visiting country, it is somewhat difficult for them to do that. For example, if,
someone wants to get a job in another country, but he or she cannot
speak or write the language of the country, then, not only the employer
would hesitate to hire him or her but also that person is very
unlikely to get an interview opportunity. This example shows that it is
essential to learn a foreign language to work abroad. That is why most
people acquire foreign language skills for traveling and working.
Meanwhile, others insist that
there are many other reasons why people learn a foreign language. For example, a
language professor who has a doctor his or her major studies other
countries' languages for his or her academic research or to contribute to our lives for
more than ten years. It is important because he or she can find a
critical and historical evidence of human culture. Based on this, someone learn
a foreign language for other reasons which are not to travel and work.
In conclusion, there are many
reasons why people learn a foreign language, although the reason of doing that
is mainly to get a job or travel in a foreign country. I assert that it depends
on the situation of the individual who is learning a foreign language.
