Nowadays, it is believed by some people that manufacturers
should make long-lasting goods. Meanwhile, there are others who argue that
companies ought to aim to manufacture goods which are cheap. Both statements will
be discussed in this essay with examples.
One of the reasons why some people testify that products
which last longer should be manufactured is that it can protect the environment.
It is obvious that the less goods are bought, the less resources would be
wasted. For example, if one product should be replaced once in 5 years instead
of every year, then the 1/5 of the effort and resources would be needed. In
addition, not every part of the no-longer-used goods can be recycled. Therefore,
it is better to produce one durable product to reduce not only the resources for
the products themselves, but also the waste.
On the other hand, cheaper products can help a number of
people take advantage of those. It can be a great opportunity not only for the individuals,
but also for the society. To illustrate, decades ago, cellular phones were not
affordable for many people. However, now almost everyone can buy these thanks
to the reduced price. Consequently, the marvellous development of the technology
in the field of mobile devices has happened by some talented people who are now
reachable to cellular phones.
In conclusion, I strongly agree with those who think long-lasting
goods are better to be manufactured. Even if it is great to improve the reachability
to products, protecting environment by not wasting resources is essential these
days.
