There are
some researchers claim that students ought to study English with native
teachers since they insist it is the best way to develop language skills. However,
some people say that studying English with non-native speaker is also helpful
so learning a language with native speakers is not an imperative choice. Personally,
as I partly agree with both viewpoints, the supportive ideas will underpin my
outlook in this essay. On the one hand,
when a student learns a basic phase of a foreign language, they may require a
teacher who speaks students’ mother tongue. Because if students only understand
their mother language, they might not know how to enunciate alphabets or read
the words. For example, when I was a primary school student in the second
grade, even though I did not know how to read an alphabet, the first page of
my English book was started with ‘Hello, how are you?’. I absolutely could
not read English and understand what my teacher was talking. Therefore, I strongly
believe that the beginner of learning English should be taught by non-native teachers
as it is the best way that students can understand the basic knowledge. On the other
hand, as I am Korean native who study English as a second language, I felt
that there is an invisible ceiling to jump into the advanced level of English
when I studied English in Korea, especially, with regard to the academic and
business English. After college graduation, I moved into a nation which use English
as the first language. Subsequently, I enhanced my English skill tremendously
by talking with my colleagues, sending business mail to customers, and listening
to all communications in English. Furthermore, I can say that it was a salient
opportunity for me to learn practical English. According to my personal
experience, I am firmly convinced that learning English with native speakers
is essential to improve language skills to the intermediate level or advanced level.
As a consequence,
I consider that studying English with native teachers is not a panacea to
cure difficulties. Since students who study the basic level of English require
a teacher who can speaks the mother language of students and if people want
to improve their language skills to the advanced level, studying with native
teachers is crucial. |
