Q. Some people believe that the personal information of violent criminals should be made available to the public. Others think that this information should be protected. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
A. It is a common belief that a violent criminal's personal information needs to be hidden to protect their rights. However, there is a more persuasive argument that their information should be revealed for the sake of public benefit. On the one hand, it is argued that it would hinder protecting their rights to unveil criminals' personal information. For example, there are still many cases that police try to hide their face when criminals are in the spotlight to protect them. Nevertheless, violent criminal's information needs to be shown in public to secure the public. In fact, to reveal their information would help people try to be more cautious and pay attention to the criminals after they are released from the jails. A good example of this has occurred in my neighborhood in Seoul. All the residents including my family received one letter which had one rapist's information including his face, name, and address. It seemed that my neighbors became more cautious than before they had got the letter. In addition, making the criminals' information public could play a role as a caution to potential criminals by letting them aware of the chance that their information would also be shown to everyone. While it is apparent that to hide violent criminal's information would be for protecting their human rights, it is undeniable that public security is more important in terms of serious crimes.
